![]() ![]() Just to reiterate from previous Metal Graphs: all scores here are indisputable truths, and not in any way opinions. I haven’t included the Judas Priest cover on South of Heaven. I’ve done Metallica, I’ve done Megadeth, now Slayer, you can see where this is going… So, I have listened to all of Slayer ’s studio albums and rated each song out of 5, and then averaged out the scores. The amount of Slayer songs listened to daily doubled following the news… 2 Comments Posted in Metal Graphs Tagged Jeff Hanneman, Kerry King, Last.fm, Slayer Metal Graphs: Slayer through the ages One thing for sure is that, should they decide to continue, Slayer will not be the same without Jeff Hanneman.Īnother interesting graph relating to Jeff‘s untimely passing is the Recent Listening Trend on Last.fm: It’s also interesting that King is the only other contributor to the music.Īs you can see Hanneman’s songs are on average slightly better, but not by much, it’s not as if he’s never written a bad song, or that King has never written a good one. Hanneman wrote just under half of all of Slayer’s songs on his own, that’s quite impressive. The figures are based on my previous Slayer based graphing session. PS here we are looking at who wrote the music, not the lyrics. Understandably people are upset, but surely it would be better that no one died? The reason people seem to cite for this idiocy is that Jeff wrote all of the good slayer songs, and Kerry all of the bad ones. ![]() Unfortunately YouTube attracts all kinds of morons, another fairly frequent comment is “Should have been Kerry King ”. If you trawl Slayer videos on YouTube you’ll see they have “RIP Jeff” comments all over them. His death was a horrible shock to the metal world, and he will be missed by many. In the unlikely event that you didn’t know, Jeff Hanneman, one of Slayer’s guitarists and founding members died on 2 nd of May this year (2013). ![]() In conclusion I am now looking forward to seeing Anthrax at Bloodstock this year, but unless they avoid the later ¾ of their catalogue it will be a hit and miss set. It would probably rate a little higher if it weren’t for the crappy Hymn tracks, but not by much… This album is definitely better than anything they’ve released since POT, but hardly a comeback… If Anthrax were to carry on their current trajectory, then we can be expecting a true comeback album near the end of February 2028, by which time Scott Ian will be 64 year old. Worship Music was meant to be Anthrax’s comeback album, with the return of Joey Belladonna on Vocals. He’s not a bad vocalist at all, and it is highly unlikely that he is solely responsible for the change in song writing direction, but it is quite possible that his hiring reflected the general misguided direction that Anthrax had decided to take… This crash in quality happens to coincide with the arrival of vocalist John Bush. The solos seem to have pretty much disappeared, the energy is lost and all of the songs blur into one big bland mess. TSOWN, S442, V8TTIR, WCFYAdespite having acronyms that sound like missile names, are pretty bad. Unfortunately it’s probably the best song on Persistence of Time… Fun Fact it was one of the first metal songs ever played on Mars.įrom here on out, things get pretty dire for poor old Anthrax. I was a bit disappointed when I found out Got the Time was a cover, it’s cheesy as hell, but fun and probably a good circle pit starter. At this point I was thinking “Anthrax why have you not revealed yourself to me before?”. Also every single song on here has a decent solo. There are several 5/5 songs here that are as catchy as they are thrashy. ![]() In fact if you like guitar solos it’s probably worth getting these albums just for that.Īmong the Living is Anthrax’s best album. All the songs have energy and truly outstanding guitar work. Two things obviously stand out from this graph first is that for a while Anthrax definitely did deserve their place in TBF, secondly something horrible happened in the 90s that they are still recovering from…įistful of Metal and Spreading the Disease are both very good early thrash albums. Very few people let their opinions and emotions affect their judgement of music. Point 5 was particularly easy as you can imagine. Give each song my full attention, and forget any preconceptions.Only score on song writing, not influence or production.Score each song out of 5, then average out all songs for an album score.I wasn’t sure whether they deserved their place in TBF… But whether any of them deserve it will be addressed in later posts, with even more graphs! I had tried to get into them before, picking songs and albums at random, but never found anything particularly gripping. To be completely honest, unlike the other three, I had never really spent much time listening to Anthrax before. At last, I have now graphed all of “ The Big Four”: Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax. ![]()
